Samoan Colours

This week, we have been celebrating the Samoan Language Week.
Here is a movie children in Room 1 made saying their colours in Samoan language.

Samoa Flags and Siapo

We learnt what Samoa Flag looks like and we made our own Samoa flag. We also learnt about Samoa's special artwork, Siapo.
Look at our beautiful Siapo and Samoa Flags we made.

AJ's story about flying to Samoa

Young children start telling their stories by drawing pictures and talking about it.
Here AJ tells us his story through his detailed and expressive pictures.  It is great to see how AJ is connecting our learning about Samoan language and culture during Samoan Language Week to his own experience of going to Samoa with his family.
He obviously has got a very close relationship with his nana.

AJ, It is great to see how your English language is improving. However, more important than that is the fact that you keep using your own beautiful Samoan language. You have even been a fantastic teacher to me and your friends during this week teaching us Samoan alphabet, numbers, colours and greetings.Malo lava, AJ!

Where is Leilani?

The book we read in our online class today was called 'Where is Sam?' and the sight word we learnt to read and write from this book was 'Here'.

Leilani, you made your own book using the same pattern this afternoon but I love your version of the book, "Where is Leilani?" much better.

I can see how hard you have tried to write all the sentences in your book using the same sentence pattern of saying "Here is Leilani's ... ." and the question "Where is Leilani?"
What a fantastic and fluent reading! Great Ako, Leilani. Ka pai.
Your lovely mum, Tara, has been a fantastic teacher at home supporting you with your learning. She is a STAR, isn't she?

Here is the reading lesson from today's class for the book "Where is Sam?"

Mother's Day Card

Here is Leilani's card she made for her lovely mum for Mother's Day on Sunday.
She followed the instructional video on her Explain Everything Writing lesson for today and created this beautiful card and wrote her message inside.

Thanks Leilani for letting me take a photo of you with your card through our Hangout online lesson as we wanted to keep it quiet from mum so she would be surprised on Sunday.

I am very proud of you showing your school value of Manaakitanga to your mum and making her happy.
Ka pai.

Leilani's Maths Problem Solving

It has been a few days now that we have been learning to add up numbers by tally marking.

This was today's Maths problem.

Here is how Leilani used her Tally Marking knowledge to solve the above problem. She showed two groups of 5 using tally marks and another group of 3 and counted them together: 5 + 5 + 3 = 13
Ka pai, Leilani. That was a quick way of counting two groups of 5 and then adding another 3.
