Half Fraction - Equal Sharing

We have been learning about 1/2 and 1/4 fractions last week and this week.  We have learnt that a fraction is one equal part of a whole. Mrs Jalili has been cutting our fruits like apples and kiwifruits in halves and in quarters. It is much easier to eat them when they are cut into smaller pieces, and in this way everybody gets a fair share of all the fruits.

Today we looked at some shapes.  Mrs Jalili wanted to cut each whole shape into two halves by drawing a line. We helped by guiding her how far to move her ruler over the shape so that the line would sit right in the middle of the shape or how far to move one side over the other side to fold the shape exactly in half. Every whole shape turned into two equal halves. So each part became one half (1/2) of that shape.

Then we learnt how to do equal sharing on each half by counting the counters one at a time placing one on each half. We each took turn sharing different numbers of counters equally on each half of the circle shape. This was fun!

Waiaua equally shared 6 pieces of salami on two halves of pizza.

Kyrie equally shared 8 pieces of salami on two halves of pizza.

  1. I like the way you used paper and cut it into different shapes to see what a half is.

    Nice Job Rm 1

  2. I like how you used paper and cut it into different types of shapes to help you understand what a half is and how to write it in fractions.

Keep up the good work Room 1
