Half Fraction - Equal Sharing

We have been learning about 1/2 and 1/4 fractions last week and this week.  We have learnt that a fraction is one equal part of a whole. Mrs Jalili has been cutting our fruits like apples and kiwifruits in halves and in quarters. It is much easier to eat them when they are cut into smaller pieces, and in this way everybody gets a fair share of all the fruits.

Today we looked at some shapes.  Mrs Jalili wanted to cut each whole shape into two halves by drawing a line. We helped by guiding her how far to move her ruler over the shape so that the line would sit right in the middle of the shape or how far to move one side over the other side to fold the shape exactly in half. Every whole shape turned into two equal halves. So each part became one half (1/2) of that shape.

Then we learnt how to do equal sharing on each half by counting the counters one at a time placing one on each half. We each took turn sharing different numbers of counters equally on each half of the circle shape. This was fun!

Waiaua equally shared 6 pieces of salami on two halves of pizza.

Kyrie equally shared 8 pieces of salami on two halves of pizza.

How to wash hands properly!

We have been learning about a virus that has been making people very sick.
We are on a mission to stop this coronavirus. We know that we can all do it by washing our hands properly and not touching our face with unwashed hands. You can see all the videos we have watched to help us learn more in our class site, Term 1 Inquiry.

Here is how we need to wash our hands.

Sea Creatures Hands on Experience

We have been learning about Sea Creatures in the last couple of weeks. Today we experienced touching and feeling a real fish and some octopuses that were not living anymore. Miss Adele from Room 12 kindly brought these to school for her students and shared them with us too. Some of us were a bit hesitant to touch them at first but after watching couple of friends doing so, we all had fun touching the big fish, and picking up an octopus and looking at its body parts. We counted their 8 arms. They had lots of suckers along each arm.

School Values at Tamaki Primary School

We have been learning about the 5 School Values we have at Tamaki Primary school. They are:

Ako; Teaching and Learning

Manaakitanga; Kindness
Mana Tangata; Respect
Kaitiakitanga; Gaurdianship, Looking after environment and people
Whanaungatanga; Positive Relationships

Today, we had a buddy time to share our learning with our buddy class, Room 8. In groups, we talked about what the school values are, how to show the school values, and gave examples of showing school values in our behaviour.

With our Buddy Class, Room 8 we joined in one of the 5 groups. In each group we talked about what we LEARNT about our School Values, we CREATED a poster for each School Value, and then videoed our ideas to make a movie to be SHARED at the school assembly.

Here is our movie.
